Christmas season in Bonn (part 1)

Yay!!! We're onto the German Christmas markets, and the first blog will be just in time for Christmas.

We arrived late afternoon in Bonn from Italy. Since of course we had our bags, and been traveling for about 2 weeks by that point, we had a bit of housekeeping to do. AKA laundry, and not in the sink, but in a real washing machine! YAY! Of course, I also know how to short cut the air drying process with the towel rack, which helped us a ton (I have yet to figure out the stupid dryer downstairs, I am convinced it doesn't work properly).

Of course though you don't want to read about us doing our laundry, you want to hear about Germany during the Christmas season. The Germans take their Christmas season seriously, with Christmas markets in just about every big city, and some of the small ones too. The markets aren't just for the Deutsch of course, there are tourists from around the world checking them out. They are so popular in fact, that there are tours just for the markets.

We ended up briefly walking through the one in Bonn on our way to dinner at First Flush tea room in Bonn (http://ff-tearoom.de/). I have been raving about this place to Brie since I first discovered it. I got a pot of caramel and cherry Rooibos tea, and Brie got a black tea. We both ordered pumpkin soup, and we both filled up on the delicious stuff. Brie is still commenting about how she wants more of that soup more than 2 weeks later it was that good.

After being so stuffed to the gills, we started to walk through the market. We knew we would be back on another day, so we were mostly scoping out the things we wanted to get when we came back. They really did the lights well. The trees looked very pretty twinkling in the branches.

I had a list of things Brie had to try/see before she was allowed to leave the country, all of which needed to be accomplished in about 4 days, and so it begins.

My list:
  • Try a German beer
  • Drink Glühwein (mulled wine) [also on my must try list]
  • See the Aachen cathedral
  • Have a pretzel (called bretzel's here)
  • Have bratwurst
  • Have currywurst
  • See as many Christmas markets as possible
  • Visit First Flush (check!)
  • I'm sure I'm forgetting something else, but oh well.
