Adventures of Flat Stanley

Flat Stanley- a book by Jeff Brown that has inspired classrooms across the nation. How? Well, now there's a Flat Stanley project: "In the Flat Stanley children's books, Stanley travels the world in envelopes. Students who read the books send the paper doll and written notes to students in other parts of the world through conventional mail and e-mail. Children exchange ideas, photographs, questions and culture with students overseas (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flat_Stanley)." I was asked to host Flat Stanley here in Bonn, and I have to say I think I enjoyed this project more than the class did. I ended up sending 10 postcards of 7 countries to the class. So where were the postcards from? Venice, Italy; Arizona, USA; Arnhem, the Netherlands; Amsterdam, the Netherlands; Bruges, Belgium; Strasbourg, France; Luxembourg City, Luxembourg; Aachen, Koln, and Bonn, Germany. I wrote about the special things of each location, a few of the local customs, foods, weather, etc. Then I took Flat Stanley to places around Bonn to get photos of his visit. Where did he go? Well, first he went to work with me because he said he wanted to try his hand at some molecular biology. Then we went to town and visited Beethoven's bronze statue and then we went to the visiting French market where we got some French cookies. Of course that wasn't enough, we walked past an outdoor ice skating ring that was being set up as we walked  to the Rhine to see the lovely cold river and were in a spot to see the Kennedy Bridge. After almost getting blown away by the wind, we walked back to the city center and went to Markt Platz to buy some fresh fruits and vegetables. Flat Stanley talked me into getting some clementines, and I couldn't resist. After a week's visit, Flat Stanley had to go back home, but hopefully the kids are enjoying all the postcards :)

Flat Stanley said 'hi' to one of the Roman guardians of Bonn

He had to say hello to Beethoven

  1. That is so cool! I had never heard of Flat Stanley before. He sure did seem to have a wonderful time around Bonn - no doubt due to the fact that you were his lovely hostess. Thanks for sharing!

  2. Thank you for hosting Flat Stanley, Shannon! I know the school kids will be so jealous of Nathan! His Flat Stanley was a world traveler! :-)

  3. Very neat! I am Nathan's dad and I have to say this is very cool! We have had older children "deliver" Flat Stanley before but have never had this kind of cultural exposure.
Thank you so much for the time you took to host Stanley and show him a good time. (Especially for someone you have never met!)
