Last time I gave a lot of background information about Arnhem, so this time it will be a shorter accounting of my day trip, be prepared for many photos of art. This time I had an extra 3 hours that I didn't have last time, and the goal was to go to
the Kröller-Müller Museum, which is an art museum and has a sculpture garden. I'll try to label all the pieces as I remember them, but no promises that I'll remember them all (that I post at least). This museum is well worth the hour trip each way needed to get to it (by bus). It is outside of Arnhem itself in a national park, nearby in Otterloo. The museum's founder Helene Kröller-Müller was an avid art collector, who recognized the genius of Vincent Van Gogh and other artists, turning her home into a museum in 1938. The museum has 81 Van Gogh's as a result of her efforts. The only other museum that has more of his works in the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam (which I have also been to). The collection has pieces from throughout his career, and many that have been published in textbooks around the world. I'm partial to the work during his mental hospital days at St. Remy. Other major artists works that are on display include: Piet Mondrian, Georges-Pierre Seurat, Odilon Redon, Georges Braque, Paul Gauguin, Lucas Cranach, James Ensor, Juan Gris, and Pablo Picasso. The museum's massive sculpture garden is on 75 acres and is one of the largest in Europe. It was the perfect place to be on a misty/rainy day. I enjoyed seeing masterpieces normally only seen in books. I've been very privileged to go to all the places I've been. After I walked through the museum, enjoyed a cup of tomato soup, and toured the outside gardens, I rode one of the free white bikes to the main entrance to catch a bus. The surrounding national park is almost like a savannah grassland surrounded by trees. Riding through the trees was a nice respite and reminded me of forests in California. After the hour ride back to the city, I was able to get some shopping done (new winter boots wooohoo!) and enjoyed tapas at a place called La Cubanita (http://www.lacubanita.nl/). The tapas were ok, enjoyed with water and of course a cointreaupolitan, yummy. They invite you to write on the walls with a Sharpie after you're done with your meal. Nothing more fun than defacing property, and some people were way more creative than I was. They probably should've handed me the marker before I stated enjoying my drink. I escaped town just in time though before the full out rain began. My good deed of this trip was helping a little old lady (85+ years old and only spoke Dutch) figure out how to use a motion sensing faucet. She and I both laughed hard, because it took about 3 minutes for that translation to work. No more big trips for the next few weeks, but small little in town things going on.
